How to Change a Culture to Continuous Improvement - A Case Study from Carestream Health About the Presenter Steve Eckert is the Carestream Health, Inc. (CSH) Dental Media Flow Manager and Operations Manager at the Dental Film Finishing Department in Rochester, NY. Carestream Health, Inc. is an internationally successful company providing medical and dental products, imaging systems and information technology solutions, molecular imaging systems and non-destructive testing products to a broad base of customers around the world. The majority of Steve’s experience has been in manufacturing but he has also held various management positions in quality, supply chain and technical marketing. Prior to his current assignment he was the Lean Implementation Manager for the Rochester NY site and had the opportunity to work with a number of Shingijutsu sensei’s and apply the lean tools at a number of Carestream Health, Inc. manufacturing facilities. Steve will discuss how he has been able to change the culture to embrace problems as improvement opportunities and to move from a reactive culture to a pro-active culture. These changes in mindset have fueled drastic improvements in safety, quality, delivery, equipment efficiency and operational waste. In 2009, this unit earned the Shingo Silver Medallion for Operational Excellence. The Dental Film Finishing unit has become a Center of Excellence in Lean and continues to benchmark other CSH business units to fuel continuous improvements and to assist other areas in the implementation of lean tools. Outside of CSH, Steve also is working with the Greater Boston Manufacturing Partnership (GBMP which administers the Shingo Prize in the North East) and the Greater Rochester Quality Council to develop a local lean community. The vision of the lean community is to share lean best practices to improve the overall execution of lean tools in the greater Rochester area. Steve Eckert earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY and is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt.
