Tailoring Our Upcoming Events to Meet Today's Needs
We are eager for the Finger Lakes region to reopen safely and effectively. We are 'shifting' our programs to meet the needs of our region through online access and virtual meetings. We encourage you to stay tuned for upcoming programs and events to help you restart and transform.
We are excited that 22 local organizations have applied to win one of the awards! We were slowed a bit when NY Pause was enacted, but our GRQC consultants are working with award applicants to evaluate their processes, use of quality tools and outcomes. Usually, every applicant receives a site visit, but this year, these evaluations are being done virtually. Every applicant receives a detailed report from their evaluation team. This process is somewhat similar to the US Department of Commerce Baldrige Award (https://www.nist.gov/baldrige), but on a local level. Finalists will be announced in September and the winners will be recognized at our annual Showcase event. Visit here often to check on progress and watch for updates.
October 7, 2020
Even though this will be a virtual event this year, it will be a great time to join in the learnings and benchmarking. We are creating an event that will truly celebrate the accomplishments of the award winners. Each of the organizations that applied for an award and is currently being evaluated by GRQC quality consultants will present their findings, process changes and improved outcomes. It is a highlight for the Finger Lakes region and will demonstrate that Rochester is not simply improving, but truly transforming on the journey of performance excellence. Week of November 2
Rochester adopted the slogan “Rochester Made Means Quality” in 1907, and the “City of Quality” name still holds true today. Greater Rochester Quality Council (GRQC) has been promoting quality in Monroe County and the eight surrounding counties for 27 years. One of our most important projects for increasing performance excellence in the community has been the annual Day of Quality.
The Day of Quality is a collaborative effort geared toward helping organizations from the five sectors that GRQC serves: business, education, government, healthcare, and not-for-profit. Professionals who are experts in quality techniques volunteer to assist smaller organizations or departments within larger organizations to complete projects that will improve performance. In the six years that GRQC has been conducting Day of Quality projects, it has helped over 46 local organizations with performance improvement projects worth more than $100,000.
During the week of November 2, GRQC’s volunteer experts will work with organizations that want to take advantage of this free assistance to add value by improving a process of their choice. And we’re not letting COVID-19 stand in the way! To protect everyone’s health and safety, GRQC’s experts will interact virtually with each applicant’s performance improvement team. Keep watching this space for information about how to apply and how to volunteer!

2018 Town of Irondequoit Day of Quality Project
In 2018, one of the Greater Rochester Quality Council’s Day of Quality teams helped the Town of Irondequoit improve its tree removal process. The attached article in the town’s newsletter describes how successful the project was. Town Supervisor David Seeley described how the volunteer team of GRQC experts helped streamline the communication process for informing residents about the status of their requests.
In Mr. Seeley’s words, “For us the best way to measure customer satisfaction in an objective manner is to look at the number of constituents who took the step of reaching out to my office regarding their inquiry. In most cases, this is done not because of the answer they would receive from our tree team, but because there had been a communication breakdown.”
The entire communication process was revamped to reduce the number of times residents needed to check on their tree removal requests. This resulted in higher customer satisfaction and a 54% reduction in complaints concerning tree removal the following year.
