Excellence in Learning: Using Digital Delivery to Enhance the Magic of MIT

2020 increased a dependence on digital delivery and intensified a focus on how people teach and learn. It also created a necessity for a heightened level of creativity and ingenuity. These conditions resulted in a closer look at what works in learning and why. Now, some experts wonder if this increased familiarity with digital delivery can result in more time and space for better interaction and engagement.

On Tuesday, Aug. 3, The MIT Club of Rochester and the Greater Rochester Quality Council will host, “Using Digital Delivery to Enhance the Magic of MIT and Open Learning,” a conversation with Krishna Rajagopal, the William A.M. Burden Professor of Physics and Dean for Digital Learning, MIT Office of Open Learning. Attendees will learn how an embrace of digital delivery can enhance traditional learning experiences.

Professor Rajagopal will share possible future paths within the context of the “Magic of MIT,” which describes the unscripted engagements experienced mostly in-person before the COVID-19 pandemic in the form of seminars, discussions, labs, makerspaces, office hours, and classes. At MIT, past and existing use of digital delivery unknowingly forged innovative ways to endure the effects of the pandemic while expanding the definition of excellence in learning. Over the past 20 years, MIT explored ways to share its teaching online. Professor Rajagopal asserts MIT can apply lessons from digital delivery to create more “magic” as students and faculty start to bump into each other again.

As Dean for Digital Learning at MIT, Krishna Rajagopal leads efforts to empower and catalyze MIT faculty to use digital technologies to augment and transform how they teach students at MIT, via MITx open online courses, via MITx MicroMasters® programs, and via MIT OpenCourseWare. Together, these platforms share the best of MIT knowledge and perspectives with learners around the globe. He is also the William A. M. Burden Professor of Physics.

Professor Rajagopal grew up in Toronto, completed his undergraduate studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, received his doctorate from Princeton University, and is a past Junior Fellow of Harvard University. He spent one year at Caltech before arriving at MIT in 1997. He later become the Associate Head of the Department of Physics in 2009, served as the Chair of the MIT Faculty from 2015 to 2017, and has been MIT’s Dean for Digital Learning since 2017.
