Redefining Quality in a Changing Industry - Former USA TODAY Network Editor Turns Competitors into Collaborators

About the Event

Told from the perspective of an award-winning newspaper editor and journalist, this event is for any organization adapting to change in their industry. Attendees will learn practices to highlight solutions in favor of problems, assemble cross-functional teams, and launch growth strategies.

The  conversation will feature Karen Magnuson, Project Director of the  Solutions Journalism Network, who leads a media collaborative that  includes more than two dozen newsrooms and community partners in New  York and Michigan. She works with the collaborative on solutions  journalism that addresses issues related to caregivers of older adults.  Mike Kilian, Executive Editor at the Rochester Democrat  and Chronicle, will share additional perspective on quality and  excellence as a member of the collaborative.

The innovative framework from the Solutions Journalism Network unites newsrooms — often competitors — and community organizations into a common cause and redefines how and why stories get made.

Modern media is in a race against time. The average U.S. consumer spends more than 12 hours daily with content on more devices than ever. For journalists, this reality has resulted in an enduring competition for page views and visitors. For some media, it’s all about more with less. In contrast, the Solutions Journalism Network is doing more with more.

About the Speaker

Karen Magnuson is Project Director, New York and Michigan, Solutions Journalism Network. Karen served as executive editor for the USA TODAY Network and Vice President, News, at the Democrat and Chronicle. Her leadership has garnered recognition from the Associated Press Managing Editors Association, the Robert G. McGruder Award for Diversity Leadership, and the First Amendment initiative. Karen serves as a Steering Committee Member for the Women’s Leadership Council, United Way of Greater Rochester and a member of the Board of Trustees at her alma mater, Alma College. Karen also earned a M.S. in Innovation Management from the Saunders College of Business at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
