About the Event
Leadership conversations with team members who are not meeting expectations can be
difficult for many reasons, such as not knowing what to say, being worried about their
reaction, having a hard time with possible conflict, and more. Even when we prepare
ahead of time, leaders may not always feel equipped to respond in the moment when
team members share personal struggles (i.e., family concerns, trauma histories,
grief/loss situations, etc.) that are impacting their ability to be present at work when we
try to address our workplace concerns.
Through discussion, real-world examples, and sample language/dialogue, this
presentation will provide reframing of such conversations through a basic understanding
of the nervous system and share a practical, trauma-informed sequence of engagement
to navigate those times. The goal of this sequence of engagement is to create
interactions that have the best chance of being resolved through both parties’ ability to
reason and collaborate rather than get “stuck” in the emotional or reactive part of the
brain. Participants will also be provided with handouts/tools that give example questions
and statements they can tailor to their work.
